NEW: REMOTE AND SOCIALLY DISTANCED LESSONS - I now offer small group lessons for teens and adults weekly via Zoom as well as socially distanced in-studio lessons. Zoom classes emulate the friendly collaborative setting of my studio. Painting instruction is offered in all color media including collage. Virtual Gallery Drawing on Zoom recreates the experience of my museum classes, with fair use images of masterpieces of world art as inspiration. Socially distanced studio lessons follow all guidelines and precautions for the current phase of reopening in Massachusetts. Please click here to inquire about remote or socially distanced lessons.
QUALIFICATIONS - I hold a Masters in Art Education from Tufts School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Massachusetts DESE License 2717504.
PHILOSOPHY - Art Builds Community. Read more here.
STUDIO - I offer small group lessons in my Cambridge studio for teens and adults. Teen students have earned Scholastic Art honors, including Gold and Silver Keys for painting. Adult students have gone on to enroll in top undergraduate and graduate art programs, including VCUArts and Tufts' School of the Museum of Fine Arts. I emphasize oil painting in a workshop setting, with a focus on green studio practice. Karl Stephan Studio is fully insured. Student Work may be seen here. Please click here to inquire about lessons.
MUSEUM - I teach teens and adults year-round in the galleries of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Teen classes include Saturday Drawing Foundations and week-long Summer Drawing Intensives. I have also developed two unique offerings for adults: Drawing to Develop Your Visual Language and Drawing to Painting. I belong to the Greater Boston Museum Educators Roundtable. COLLABORATION - I have lead collaborative art-making activities for educators, families, music students and other groups in studio, museum and university settings, including Tufts University, Longy School of Music and the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.
